Yūzen dyeing is said to have originated during the Kyōhō era of the Edo period (1684–1687), founded by the Kyoto painter Miyazaki Yūzensai.
Yūzen dyeing flourished in Edo during the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804–1827), when many painters in the service of feudal lords relocated to the city, bringing with them a wide range of techniques that were passed down and refined.
Tokyo hand-painted Yūzen is characterized by a fully integrated creative process, in which the artist carries out every step—from concept and design to sketching, dye application, and finishing—resulting in calm colors and simple yet delicate patterns.
